Car subscription in Malaysia, explained

Updated · By the Grandpride team, Petaling Jaya

Draft, not public. 6 questions for Grandpride to answer before this is published, highlighted below.

A car subscription in Malaysia lets you drive a car for months without buying it. With a Grandpride Subscription, Grandpride owns the car and you pay one fixed monthly price that covers insurance, road tax, routine maintenance and roadside assistance. You buy the fuel. When you're done, you hand the car back or swap it for another.

Think of a phone plan, but for a car: one price, one contract, and somebody else does the renewals.

An anti-theft system in every car

Most of the confusion about subscriptions comes from treating them like something else. These are the usual mix-ups.

"It's a car loan with a different name"

It isn't. You're not buying the car, so you're not borrowing money, and there's no down payment. Grandpride lists a subscription as not affecting your bank DSR (debt service ratio), and you can pay for it entirely by credit card. Whether that suits your own finances is your call: we can explain the terms, but we can't give you financial advice.

"The monthly price is the whole bill"

Nearly. On top of it you pay fuel, and a small fee if you drive past your monthly mileage package, unless you picked the unlimited-mileage option CHECK: the mileage package sizes and the per-km fee over the package. If there's an accident, ask what you'd put towards a claim CHECK: the insurance excess a subscriber pays per claim.

So a subscription is a weaker fit if you drive very long distances every month. Someone commuting from Seremban to KL daily should price the mileage package carefully before signing.

"Subscription cars are brand new"

They're classified as used, because Grandpride owns and registers every one. Most have never had a previous owner, and only cars rated A+ by an independent inspection service get into the Grandpride Certified Subscription fleet. Models on subscription have included the Mercedes-Benz C200 and C300 Coupé, the Aston Martin DB11, the BMW 740Li and the Toyota Alphard CHECK: the current subscription line-up.

"Once you sign, you're stuck with that car"

You can swap. Call to reserve a different car and you move to a similar vehicle, with Grandpride's concierge handling the pick-up and delivery. If you're not happy within the first 3 days or 150 km, Grandpride takes the car back and helps you find another. If a car breaks down, which is unlikely on a maintained car, roadside assistance is covered and you swap to another one.

Ending a fixed term early is different, and you should ask before you sign CHECK: early termination terms and any fee.

"Subscription and leasing are the same thing"

Not at Grandpride. On a subscription, Grandpride owns the car the whole time and it goes back at the end. If owning the car at the end is the point, that's Lease to Own, a separate programme; our guide to lease to own in Malaysia explains it.

What it costs: one published example

Grandpride publishes a deal of the week. This one, for a Porsche 992 Carrera 4S, is from the subscription page:

TermMonthly price
Month to monthRM 6,270
12 monthsRM 5,330
24 monthsRM 4,389
36 monthsRM 3,135
60 monthsRM 2,508

The longer the term, the lower the monthly price, and here a 36-month term costs half of month to month. Your Grandpride representative confirms the car, term and price before you sign CHECK: is this Porsche deal still current at publication, and what monthly price do other subscription cars start from.

For a few days or an occasion, rent: browse the rental fleet, or read about daily, weekly and monthly car rental for longer stays. If you want a car for ten years and to sell it after, buy. A subscription fits in between: a premium car for a year or two, no loan, none of the insurance, road tax and servicing admin, and the option to swap if your life changes.

Starting a subscription

  1. Pick your car and options on the subscription page and fill in the form. Approval needs some information from you CHECK: what documents and checks a subscription application needs, and whether a refundable deposit is taken.
  2. Once you're approved, a Grandpride representative contacts you within 48 hours to go through the details and set a date to view the car.
  3. See the car at Grandpride's HQ in Section 13, Petaling Jaya. Pick a fengshui time if you like.
  4. Share a few personal details, pay and sign, and drive away.

If you'd like to talk it through first, contact the team or WhatsApp +6010 322 3223. And if you're on the other side of this, with a car you hardly use, read how to rent out your car in Malaysia.
