Long term and monthly car rental in Malaysia: by the day, the month, or for keeps

Under a month, rent. For several months, a monthly or long term car rental in Malaysia is the simple option, but compare it with a subscription. If you want the car to be yours at the end, lease to own. Those are the four ways to keep a Grandpride car, and the length of time you need it decides most of it.

How does renting by the day or week work?

Pick a car on the vehicle list, choose your dates and times, then the options: extra mileage, stronger protection than the Basic Cover that comes with every rental, and a loaded Touch 'n Go card. The price updates as you go. You pay a RM 50 booking fee online to reserve, which comes off the total, and the rest in store or in person. The car comes to your door in the Klang Valley (free within 10 km of the Petaling Jaya showroom, RM 100 elsewhere) or you collect it in store.

That's the right tool for a weekend away, a wedding, a visitor in town for a few days, or the week your own car is in the workshop. A week books the same way as a day.

How much is a long term car rental?

Start from the car's day rate on its page, multiply by your days, and add the options. Then ask us to do better, because for weeks or months the rate depends on the car, the dates and how long you keep it CHECK: weekly and monthly rental discounts, from how many days they apply, and any minimum rental length. WhatsApp us the car and the dates and we'll quote before you reserve.

Mileage matters more over a month. Every day includes 120 km, but a daily commute across the Klang Valley plus weekends adds up quickly, so unlimited is usually the calmer choice. Our guide to rental car mileage and toll cards shows how to estimate it.

A long rental has the same rules as a short one: only the named renter drives, the car stays in Peninsular Malaysia, and it goes back with the fuel level it had at collection.

Is long term car rental worth it?

Yes, when the need has an end date and you want to hand the car back with nothing to sell: a three-month project, a relocation, the gap before a new car arrives. Companies already use Grandpride for long rentals for management teams and events. If you're moving here for work, cars for expats in Malaysia takes you from the first month to settling in.

Once it's many months, put a subscription quote next to the rental one.

Is a month's rental cheaper than a month's subscription?

It depends on the car and the term, so ask us for both prices on the same car CHECK: how a one-month rental price compares with a month-to-month subscription.

With a Grandpride subscription, Grandpride owns the car and you pay one monthly price that includes insurance, road tax, routine maintenance and roadside assistance. You pay for fuel, plus a small fee for distance over your mileage package unless you take unlimited. There's no loan and no down payment, the monthly price drops the longer you subscribe, and you can swap to a similar car when your needs change. Our car subscription guide has the published prices and explains the A+ cars.

Can I start with a rental and move to a subscription?

Tell us that's the plan when you book CHECK: can a rental be converted into a subscription, and is any of the rental credited.

What if I want to keep the car?

Then it's Grandpride Certified Lease to Own. You choose a Grandpride Certified car (late model, under 70,000 km, checked inside and out, with an up-to-date service record), sign with a down payment, and pay over 12 to 36 months. At the end the car is yours CHECK: lawyer to confirm how the lease-to-own contract is structured.

No bank is involved, so decisions are made in-house and your bank DSR isn't looked at. Cars in stock can be approved instantly, others in as little as 30 minutes, and there's no mileage limit. Road tax, insurance and even a special number plate can be arranged in-house, but they're not part of the lease. It's open to people with little or no credit history, and there's a corporate programme for companies building a fleet. Our guide to lease to own in Malaysia explains how it differs from informal arrangements, and corporate car rental in Kuala Lumpur covers the company side.
