If your own car is in the workshop for a week and the school run still has to happen, a Proton X70 rental is the sensible fix. Grandpride rents the Proton X70 at RM 800 a day and its smaller sibling, the Proton X50, at RM 600 a day. Both are ordinary, familiar SUVs, and for a week of school runs that's what you want.
Both have Geely roots. The X70 is Proton's version of the Geely Boyue and went on sale here at the end of 2018. The X50 is based on the Geely Binyue and arrived in 2020. The difference that matters on a rental is size.
If there are five of you, take the X70
The X70 is a C-segment SUV, about 4.5 metres long, with five seats: two in front and a full bench behind. For a family of four or five on the school run and the weekly shop, it is the right size.
It is also the one to take up to Genting, Bukit Tinggi or Cameron Highlands with a full car, because the extra length gives you more room for people and bags. Our guide to driving up Genting Highlands yourself covers the climb and the fog.
If it's mostly you, in town, take the X50
The X50 is a B-segment SUV, roughly 20 cm shorter than the X70. That shows up where KL is tight, in older condo car parks with sharp ramps or a parallel space outside a shop in SS2. If the week is meetings, errands and one passenger at most, it does everything the X70 does in less space.
If you want it to feel a bit more special
Neither Proton is a luxury car, and nobody will mistake it for one. If the week includes a client pick-up or a family dinner where the car will be seen, look at the Toyota Harrier, from RM 600 a day, or the Mercedes-Benz GLC250 4Matic at RM 1,700 a day. Both are five-seat SUVs, so you give up nothing in space.
If you need seven seats
Neither Proton has a third row. For grandparents plus the kids, go straight to a seven-seater: the Volvo XC90 or a Toyota Vellfire. Our 7 seater car rental guide compares them.
If it's for a month, not a week
Same booking, same car, but two things change. Every rental day includes 120 km, which covers most daily commutes in the Klang Valley, but a month of commuting plus weekend trips adds up, so do the sum and consider unlimited mileage. Also ask before you book: the rental page invites you to ask for a better price, and a month is a good reason to. Our guide to monthly car rental in Malaysia explains how a long rental compares with a subscription.
A few rules that apply either way
- Only the named renter drives. If you and your spouse both need the car on different days, it has to be booked in the name of the person who will drive it. Additional drivers can't be added.
- Fuel goes back at the level you collected it. Neither Proton comes with fuel included.
- Grandpride brings the car to your door free within 10 km of the Petaling Jaya showroom in Section 13, and for RM 100 elsewhere in the Klang Valley CHECK: how much notice delivery needs. Someone else can collect it from the showroom for you if you add their details when you book.
- The car stays in Peninsular Malaysia: no Singapore, no Thailand.
