Birthday car rental in KL: start with who drives

Updated · By the Grandpride team, Petaling Jaya

Draft, not public. 4 questions for Grandpride to answer before this is published, highlighted below.

Lamborghini Huracan

Before you choose a birthday car rental in KL, decide who is going to drive it. You, the birthday person, or a chauffeur. That one decision settles whose name goes on the booking, how easy the secret is to keep, and which cars make sense. A Lamborghini Huracán starts from RM 6,100 a day as a self-drive car and can be delivered to the door; a chauffeured Mercedes-Benz S-Class starts at RM 300 an hour.

If you're driving and they're the passenger

This is the easiest surprise to keep. The booking needs only your details, so nothing reaches their phone or inbox. You collect the car, or have it delivered somewhere they won't see it, and turn up at their door.

It works best for a partner: a roof-down evening, an early drive out of the city for breakfast, or arriving for dinner in something they didn't expect. For two people, the BMW Z4 at RM 1,500 a day is the relaxed choice. If you want the sound and the shape most people picture when they hear "supercar", look at the Huracán, and read our tips on driving a supercar for the first time before the day if you've never driven one.

If the drive is the present

Then the birthday person has to be the named renter. On a Grandpride self-drive rental only the named renter may drive, and there are no second drivers, so their name and details go on the booking and they must meet the driver requirements CHECK: licence, minimum age and ID needed, especially for a supercar.

You can still keep the car itself a secret. Tell them to keep the day free and bring their licence, and nothing more. Someone else can collect the car for them, or Grandpride can deliver it.

For an 18th or 21st, check the age rules before you plan anything else. Our guide to car rental age requirements in Malaysia explains how they usually work.

If nobody at the party should drive

A parent's 60th, a group dinner, anything with a toast: book a chauffeur. On the chauffeur booking page, choose "Booking for someone else" and add the guest of honour's name and number, and the chauffeur contacts them directly on the day. Nobody has to stay sober or hunt for parking, and the car can take guests home at the end of the evening if you've booked the hours.

Book at least two days ahead, because online chauffeur bookings need that much notice. Evenings cost more: hours that start between 7 pm and 11 pm are 30% more, and between 11 pm and 7 am 50% more. Our guide to hourly chauffeur prices in Kuala Lumpur shows how the bands add up over a dinner.

Timing the reveal

Work backwards from the moment they see the car: front door in the morning, the office car park after work, or outside the restaurant.

  1. Check the car is free. Put the birthday date into the vehicle list. A booked car shows as not available, and the car's own page greys out the days it's taken.
  2. Choose delivery or collection. Delivery is free within 10 km of the Petaling Jaya showroom and RM 100 elsewhere in the Klang Valley. Agree the address and time when you reserve CHECK: how much notice delivery needs, and whether a delivery can be timed to a set minute or only a time window. Our guide to car rental delivery in the Klang Valley explains what happens at a doorstep handover.
  3. Reserve. A RM 50 booking fee is paid online and comes off the total. The rest is paid in store or in person.
  4. Brief one accomplice: the person who keeps the birthday person indoors, or away from the car park, until the car is there.

What it costs on the day

The day rate covers 120 km a day and Basic Cover. Everything else is something you add:

  • Protection. On a supercar, the Loss Damage Waiver or Grandpride Protection+ is the add-on we'd look at first. Protection+ takes the excess to zero for damage and theft, glass and tyres included. Prices depend on the car and show when you book.
  • Mileage. A long drive out of town can need +50 km or +100 km a day, or unlimited.
  • A Touch 'n Go card for tolls, loaded with RM 50 to RM 500. You pay exactly what's on it.
  • Fuel. Bring the car back with the same level it had at collection.
  • A deposit, due on the day CHECK: deposit amount for a supercar and how long the refund takes.

Dalam Bahasa Malaysia: harga sewa kereta untuk hari jadi bergantung pada kereta, contohnya BMW Z4 RM 1,500 sehari, termasuk 120 km sehari.

The small things

For balloons inside the car or a bow on the bonnet, ask Grandpride before the day CHECK: may customers add ribbons, bows or balloons to a rented car, and does Grandpride offer them?. Delivery can go to any Klang Valley address, a hotel or office included, but whether a venue lets a car wait at its entrance is the venue's call. For photos, plan one stop in a quiet, open car park rather than at a busy roadside. And give the car a road worth driving: our guide to convertible car rental in Kuala Lumpur has roof-down routes out of the city.
