Choose a luxury car rental company in Malaysia by what it will put in writing before you pay. From one Instagram page to the next the cars look much the same. The permit, the excess, the deposit terms and the address are where companies differ, and a company that is vague on any of them will be vague later, when something has gone wrong.
These are the six questions we'd ask any company, us included, with what a good answer sounds like and where you can check it yourself.
| Ask | A good answer | Check it with | Grandpride's answer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Do you hold a rental permit? | Yes, with the details, and a hexagon sticker on the car | APAD | CHECK: Grandpride's APAD rental permit details |
| What's your registered company? | A name and number that match the invoice and the bank account | SSM e-Search | Grandpride Luxury Travel Sdn. Bhd., 201801035116 (1297143-K) |
| What if I damage the car? | The excess in ringgit, and ways to lower it | The booking or the agreement | Basic Cover included; LDW lowers the excess; Protection+ takes it to zero |
| What's in the price? | An itemised quote: rate, mileage, extras | The quote | Itemised; 120 km a day included; RM 50 booking fee comes off the total |
| How much is the deposit, and when is it back? | An amount and a refund time, in writing | The agreement | CHECK: deposit by car and refund time |
| Where can I find you? | A showroom or office with opening hours | Google Maps, or a visit | Section 13, Petaling Jaya; open seven days |
The permit comes before the car
In Peninsular Malaysia, self-drive rental operators are permitted through APAD, the land public transport agency. Permitted rental cars are inspected every six months and carry a hexagon sticker, and the public can check an operator with APAD. A private car rented out without a permit can be seized, and the insurance generally won't cover an accident, which leaves you, the driver, exposed. Our guide to car rental scams in Malaysia covers this and the other ways a booking can go wrong.
Read the protection terms before the spec sheet
On a supercar, the excess is what you pay out of your own pocket after a scrape or a crash. Ask for it in ringgit, not as "standard excess applies".
At Grandpride, Basic Cover comes with every rental and leaves you responsible for damage up to the standard excess. The Loss Damage Waiver lowers that excess. Grandpride Protection+ takes it to zero on damage and theft, with glass and tyres included. Prices vary by car and are shown as you book, so you can compare before you commit. If it's your first time in a supercar, take the zero-excess option. The full comparison is in our guide to rental car protection in Malaysia.
A price you can see without asking
"Price on request" is common in luxury rental. It makes comparison hard, and it means the number can move with how keen you sound.
Grandpride publishes a day rate on almost every car's page. A Lamborghini Urus starts from RM 6,000 a day and a Rolls-Royce Ghost is RM 12,100 a day. Every rental includes 120 km a day; you can add 50 or 100 km a day or unlimited mileage, which costs less per kilometre than paying for extra kilometres afterwards. A loaded Touch 'n Go card is optional, and you pay exactly what you load. The quote is itemised, with no tax line added, and the only thing paid online is a RM 50 booking fee that comes off the total.
Is the car in the photo the car you'll drive?
Ask which car, exactly: model year, colour, mileage. Two cars with the same badge can be several years apart. Grandpride lists the BMW 740Li G11 twice, as a 2018 car at RM 1,700 a day and a 2021 car at RM 3,300, and each car's page has its own calendar with the days it's already booked greyed out.
At handover, walk round the car with the company's staff and photograph every mark before you drive off. Our rental car inspection checklist lists what to look at.
Reviews: read the bad ones
Reviews help most when you read the one-star ones and the company's replies. A complaint answered calmly with a fix tells you more about a company than a batch of five-star reviews posted in the same week. Look at how long a company has been reviewed, too. A page that appeared this year and has hundreds of reviews deserves a second look.
"Near me" matters less if they deliver
If you searched for a luxury car rental company near me, delivery changes the maths. Grandpride delivers free within 10 km of the Petaling Jaya showroom and for RM 100 elsewhere in the Klang Valley; outside the Klang Valley it's by quote. Someone else can collect the car from the store on your behalf if you add their details when you book. Our guide to car rental delivery in the Klang Valley covers timing and handover.
Being close still helps when you need to swap a car or sort a problem in person. Grandpride's showroom is at Lot 5A / No. 5, Jalan 13/2, Section 13, Petaling Jaya, open Monday to Saturday 9 am–9 pm and Sunday 10 am–8 pm.
Rules that differ from company to company
Ask these before you book, because they're the ones that cause arguments at the return:
- Fuel. Grandpride's rule: bring the car back with the same fuel level it left with.
- Borders. Grandpride's cars stay in Peninsular Malaysia, so no Singapore or Thailand. If you need to cross, read driving a Malaysian rental car to Singapore first.
- Other drivers. Only the named renter drives a Grandpride self-drive car. No swapping halfway to Genting.
- Age and licence. CHECK: Grandpride's minimum age, licence and ID requirements, and any higher limits for supercars
If those answers work for you, every car's rate and calendar is on the vehicle list, and the questions above work just as well over the phone to the showroom.
