A company car in Malaysia comes to an SME in one of six ways: bought outright, on hire purchase, on subscription, leased to own, rented by the month, or replaced by a chauffeur on the days you need one. Three questions sort them: how much cash you're willing to tie up, whether the company needs to own the car, and how sure you are about what you'll need two years from now. Tax depends on your company's position, so take the shortlist to your accountant before you sign anything.
| Cash up front | Company owns it | Running costs handled | Flexibility | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Buy outright | All of it | Yes, from day one | No | Low: you sell it to exit |
| Hire purchase | Down payment | After the final instalment | No | Low |
| Lease to own (Grandpride) | Down payment | At the end of 12 to 36 months | Road tax and insurance arranged in-house, not part of the lease | Medium |
| Subscription (Grandpride) | No down payment | No | Insurance, road tax, maintenance included | High: swap or return |
| Monthly rental | No down payment | No | Basic Cover included | High |
| Chauffeur or driver | None | No | Yes, for chauffeured cars | Pay only for the hours used |
If you have the cash and will keep the car for years: buy it
Paying cash is the simplest on paper. No interest, the company owns the car from day one, and it can keep it as long as it likes. The price is liquidity: money in a car isn't in stock, staff or marketing, and the car loses value on the balance sheet. Tax relief has a ceiling too. Capital allowances on cars not licensed for commercial use are capped, and the cap depends on whether the car is new and what it cost.
If you want to own it but not pay at once: hire purchase or lease to own
Most businesses that buy, finance on hire purchase. The bank or finance company owns the car until the last instalment; you pay a down payment and monthly instalments, and the lender assesses the company's accounts. That's harder for a newly formed Sdn Bhd with little trading history.
The rules for new hire-purchase agreements changed on 1 June 2026, when amendments to the Hire-Purchase Act 1967 replaced the old flat-rate calculation with a reducing-balance method; some lenders have until early 2027 to switch over. Ask any lender how your agreement is calculated.
The Grandpride Corporate Lease to Own Programme is the route without a bank. Grandpride decides in-house, which it says makes ownership much easier for a new company. You sign with a down payment, pay over 12 to 36 months with repayments arranged around your term, have no mileage limit, and the car is the company's at the end. The cars are Grandpride Certified: late models under 70,000 km, checked inside and out, with an up-to-date service record. How the contract is structured, and how it's taxed, are questions for your lawyer and accountant CHECK: lawyer to confirm how the lease-to-own contract is structured, and who is the registered owner during the term CHECK: eligibility and documents for the corporate programme. The details are on the Lease to Own page.
Bolehkah syarikat baharu memiliki kereta syarikat tanpa pinjaman bank? Boleh, melalui program Corporate Lease to Own: wang pendahuluan, bayaran selama 12 hingga 36 bulan, dan kereta milik syarikat pada akhir tempoh.
If you want one predictable monthly cost: subscription
A Grandpride Subscription is one monthly price for the car, insurance, road tax, routine maintenance and roadside assistance. Grandpride owns the car and there's no down payment. Swap to a similar car when needs change, or hand it back. For a business, the point is a fixed cost and no cars to sell later CHECK: is car subscription available to companies as well as individuals, and can invoices be issued in the company's name?. Our guide to car subscription in Malaysia has the published prices, and subscription vs lease vs hire purchase compares the three in plain terms.
If you need a car for three months: rent it
A project, a new hire waiting for their car, a gap between leases. Renting by the month avoids any long commitment, and Grandpride already rents long term to companies for management teams and events. Two rules matter for staff cars: only the named renter may drive, so book it in the name of the person who'll use it, and the car stays in Peninsular Malaysia. A BMW 530i is RM 800 a day before any monthly price is agreed CHECK: monthly or long-term rates for companies. See daily, weekly and monthly car rental for how longer rentals are booked.
If you only need a car for visitors and board days: don't own one
Some companies don't need a car every day. They need one for the airport, for a client lunch, for the chairman's visit. Grandpride's chauffeur service brings both car and chauffeur, booked by the hour from 3 to 23 hours, with flat fares to KLIA and KLIA 2. If the company already has cars, a Grandpride driver is RM 385 for an 8-hour day in your own car. Corporate car rental and chauffeurs in Kuala Lumpur covers both in more detail.
What to ask your accountant
- If staff can use the car privately, how is the benefit in kind valued? A company car used privately is generally a taxable benefit for the employee under the Inland Revenue Board's rules, and a driver the company provides can be one too.
- What capital allowance can we claim on this car, given the cap on non-commercial cars?
- Does an EV rental qualify? Rules gazetted in 2026 allow Malaysian companies a deduction for renting new electric vehicles not licensed for commercial use, up to a yearly cap, for years of assessment 2023 to 2027. Whether a particular rental, subscription or lease counts is your accountant's call; our guide to EV subscription in Malaysia covers the driving side.
- Taking the quotes for each option, which leaves the company better off after tax? The lowest monthly figure isn't always the answer.
