How early to go to KLIA, and when to leave home

Updated · By the Grandpride team, Petaling Jaya

Arrive at KLIA three hours before an international flight and two hours before a domestic one. Those are Malaysia Airlines' figures, and its check-in counters close 60 minutes before departure for both. In festive peaks, Malaysia Airports has asked passengers to arrive at least four hours early. How early to go to KLIA, then, is that arrival time plus the drive, plus a buffer for the part of the drive nobody controls.

Low-cost airlines set their own counter and bag-drop cut-offs. Check your airline's rule on the booking confirmation rather than assuming it matches the table.

Work backwards from the departure time

KLIA is about 50 to 60 km by road from central KL and Petaling Jaya. On a clear road that's an easy drive. In the weekday evening rush, or in a thunderstorm, it can take a lot longer, and the airport highways jam like any other.

So work it out from the flight, not from habit:

  1. Take the departure time.
  2. Subtract the arrival margin from the table above.
  3. Subtract the drive time Waze or Google Maps predicts for the hour you'd leave. Both apps let you set a future departure time.
  4. Subtract a buffer for the unexpected. We'd allow at least 30 minutes on an ordinary day and more if it's raining, a Friday evening or a school-holiday weekend.

Say your flight to Tokyo leaves at 10.30 pm on a weekday. You want to be at the terminal by 7.30 pm. If the app says 70 minutes from PJ at 5.30 pm, leaving at 5.50 pm cuts it fine, because 5.30 to 7 pm is the heart of the evening rush. Leave at 5 pm instead. If the roads are clear, you'll have time for dinner airside.

Our guide to KL traffic jam times shows when the weekday peaks start and ease.

When to add more time

  • Festive seasons and long weekends. This is when the four-hour advice usually appears. It covers queues inside the terminal as much as traffic outside it.
  • Big events at Sepang. The circuit sits close to the airport. For the Formula 1 weekend in October 2026, Malaysia Airlines asked KLIA passengers to allow extra travel time because of congestion around KLIA and Sepang. Our MotoGP at Sepang guide covers race-weekend traffic.
  • Heavy rain. Afternoon and evening storms slow every road in the Klang Valley.
  • Travelling with people who don't fly often. Elderly parents, a big family with prams, lots of luggage to weigh: give yourselves the extra half hour.

Check the terminal before you leave

KLIA has two terminals about 2 km apart. Malaysia Airlines and most full-service airlines use Terminal 1. AirAsia and other low-cost airlines use Terminal 2. If you end up at the wrong one, the airport train between them takes about three minutes, but you will have spent your buffer finding it. Put the right terminal into Waze or Google Maps before you go.

If someone else is driving

On a bad traffic day, the airport train is often the fastest way to the airport. KLIA Ekspres runs from KL Sentral to Terminal 1 in about half an hour, whatever the highway is doing. If you have heavy bags, or you're leaving from PJ rather than the city, being driven door to door is easier.

Grandpride's KLIA transfer is a flat fare for trips under 80 km, the same day or night, from RM 300 in a Toyota Vellfire. Our KLIA transfer guide compares the fare for each car. Because it's flat, a slow drive doesn't change the price, which takes some of the sting out of leaving early.

When you book the transfer, give the flight time and terminal, and pick a pickup time that leaves the buffer above. A Grandpride representative gets in touch after you book, and your chauffeur calls to confirm the schedule. Online bookings need at least two days' notice, so book the airport run at the same time as the flight.
