If you're landing after a long flight, book a one-way chauffeur from KLIA to Cameron Highlands and sleep on the way. If you're staying a week and want to drive around the highlands and come back through Ipoh, rent a car, but collect it the day after you land. The trip is roughly 260 km and takes four hours or more, and the last hour is a narrow mountain road with bends and, often, fog. That is the part you don't want to drive tired.

The KLIA flat fare doesn't apply here. It covers trips under 80 km, and Cameron Highlands is three times that, so the trip is priced as a One Way booking on distance. The chauffeur booking page shows the full price for every free car before you reserve. What it costs if you want the same chauffeur to bring you back a week later is CHECK: how a return trip from Cameron Highlands on a later date is priced, and whether the empty run back to KL is included in a one-way fare.
The route up
From KLIA the expressway runs north past the Klang Valley and up the North–South Expressway towards Ipoh. There are two ways into the highlands:
- Tapah exit, then Route 59. The shorter and more winding road. It reaches Ringlet first, then Tanah Rata. It's narrow and steep in places, with blind corners, and prone to landslips in the rainy season. Fill up in Tapah before the climb.
- Simpang Pulai exit, then Route 185. A bit longer, about four hours from KL rather than three and a half, and less winding. It arrives at Kampung Raja first, then passes Tringkap, Kea Farm and Brinchang. If anyone in the car gets carsick, ask for this road.
Up top, the stretch from Tanah Rata through Brinchang to Kea Farm jams at weekends and on holidays, and parking is limited. It's cooler too: highs seldom pass 25 °C, and nights can drop to around 9 °C. Our KL to Cameron Highlands guide covers the towns, the tea estates and what to do.
Which chauffeur car
Four hours with luggage is where the MPVs earn their keep. The Toyota Alphard, the Toyota Vellfire and the Lexus LM300h each seat seven and take three large suitcases. For one or two people, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, the BMW i7 and the Bentley Bentayga Mansory seat five and take two. A family of four with four big cases needs an MPV; don't try to fit them into the S-Class boot. Ask for a child seat by giving the children's ages in the Additional Request box when you book; it's priced per booking. Luxury chauffeur cars compared sets the six side by side.
Whether the evening and overnight rates (hours from 7 pm +30%, from 11 pm +50%) apply to a one-way trip is CHECK: do the 7 pm–11 pm and 11 pm–7 am surcharges apply to one-way distance-priced trips; either way, the price you see at booking is the full price. An evening arrival means the climb happens in the dark; a morning arrival gets you up in daylight, which is better for everyone in the car, chauffeur included.
If you'd rather drive
Collect the car the next morning, after a night in KL or PJ, and do the climb with a clear head. The showroom in Section 13, Petaling Jaya, opens at 9 am (10 am on Sundays), or the car comes to your hotel: free within 10 km of the showroom, RM 100 elsewhere in the Klang Valley. Whether we can hand a self-drive car over at the terminal is CHECK: can Grandpride deliver a self-drive car to KLIA Terminal 1 or 2, and at what fee. Our guide to self-drive car rental from KLIA explains the options.
For the highlands, a comfortable SUV with good ground clearance suits the road better than a low coupé. An SUV like the BMW X5 M at RM 1,600 a day is comfortable on the climb; a Toyota Harrier from RM 600 does the job for less. PJ to Cameron and back is roughly 420 km before any driving up top, so on a three-day rental add +100 km a day (660 km in total) and on a shorter one take unlimited. Bring it back with the fuel level it left with; Tapah on the way down is the place to fill up.
Two rules to know before you plan: only the named renter drives, and the car stays in Peninsular Malaysia.
