Valet parking at KLIA is charged by the hour up to a daily maximum, so its cost grows with every day you're away. A chauffeur both ways costs two flat fares however long the trip is. That gives you the rule: for a short trip, driving yourself and parking usually wins on price; the longer you're away, the better a chauffeur looks. Where the line falls depends on your car, your trip and today's parking rates, so do the sum below with real numbers.
What parking at KLIA looks like
Both terminals have more than one kind of parking:
- Terminal 1 has covered short-term parking a walk from the terminal, preferred parking closer to the entrances, and valet, where you leave the car near the terminal. Malaysia Airports runs the main Terminal 1 car parks.
- The long-term car park (LTCP) is outdoor, with a free shuttle to both terminals. Some Terminal 1 and LTCP options can be booked ahead.
- Terminal 2 parking is at Gateway@klia2, the mall attached to the terminal: normal, preferred and valet, all cashless.
- Private car parks away from the airport run their own shuttles.
Rates change, so check them on the Malaysia Airports or Gateway@klia2 site for your dates.
The sum to do
Driving yourself:
- Fuel for about 100 to 120 km, there and back from PJ or central KL.
- Tolls both ways.
- Parking: the daily maximum for the option you'd use, times the number of days, plus any part day.
A Grandpride chauffeur:
- One flat fare to the airport and one back. The fare covers a trip under 80 km, costs the same day or night, and starts at RM 300 each way in a Toyota Vellfire. Central KL and PJ are inside that distance.
- No parking. Grandpride prices the trip in full before you reserve and says there are no hidden extras CHECK: are expressway tolls included in the KLIA flat fare.
For a two-day trip, parking is two days of charges and the chauffeur is two fares: parking is likely to come out cheaper. For a two-week holiday, it's fourteen days of parking against the same two fares, and the gap closes or reverses. Work it out for your own dates before you decide.
What the price leaves out
Some things don't show up in that sum, and they're why people choose one over the other.
For driving and parking:
- You choose your own departure time and don't depend on anyone.
- Coming home is quick: off the plane, to the car, gone.
- You can take the car on to somewhere else after landing.
Against it:
- After a long-haul flight, you're driving an expressway tired, possibly at night.
- An outdoor long-term bay leaves the car in sun and rain for days.
- Valet and the car parks nearest the terminal cost more for the convenience, and valet means someone else holds your keys for the whole trip.
For a chauffeur:
- Someone meets you at arrivals. Add your flight number and the flight is tracked, so a delay is handled without you calling from the plane.
- Night costs no more: the airport fare is the same at 2 am as at 2 pm.
- Five or seven seats and room for luggage, without the car park shuttle. The MPVs take three large suitcases, the S-Class two.
Against it:
- Online bookings need at least two days' notice, so it doesn't suit a last-minute trip.
- You're on someone else's pickup time on the way out.
Our recommendation
Short trip, travelling light, landing in daylight: drive and park. Long holiday, a family with luggage, or a red-eye landing: book a chauffeur both ways. In between, do the sum.
A third way: your own car, our driver
If you'd rather your own car went to the airport but you didn't have to drive it home after a long flight, Grandpride's Driver & Bodyguard service can put a driver in your car. A driver is RM 385 per 8-hour day, driving your own vehicle door to door. Whether it can be booked for an airport drop-off and a separate pickup on the day you return, and how a short run like that is charged, is CHECK: can the Driver service be booked for a one-way airport run in the customer's car, and is it charged as a full 8-hour day. A personal driver for your own car explains how the service works.
Booking the chauffeur
On Book a chauffeur, choose One Way, put your address and the airport, and pick the car. You pay a RM 50 booking fee online, which comes off the total, and the rest in store or in person. Book the return leg at the same time with your inbound flight number. KLIA transfers to Kuala Lumpur lists the flat fare for each car, and how early to leave for KLIA helps you pick the pickup time on the way out.
