Count the suitcases before you count the seats. A car can carry seven people or seven people's luggage, and rarely both. Take two cars, or send the luggage ahead. Three large suitcases is what the chauffeur MPVs take, and seven won't go.
Seven adults, light bags
An MPV. Sliding doors on both sides, and a middle row that's the comfortable place to be on a long drive. On three generations' trips, give the grandparents the middle row.
A family of five or six with young children
The XC90 or an MPV both work. The XC90 drives like a big, comfortable car rather than a van, and its third row is best for children, or adults on short trips. Think of it as a five-seater with two spare seats, not a full load of adults.
Since January 2020, child seats have been compulsory for young children in private cars in Malaysia, under rules made under the Road Transport Act; child seat law in Malaysia explains who needs what. If you bring your own, the middle row of an MPV, through the sliding door, is the easiest place to fit them.
Nobody wants to drive it
Then book one with a chauffeur. It removes the two hardest parts of a family trip: driving a large car you don't know, and parking it.

Flat fares are the same day or night, for trips under 80 km. Over 12 hours is 10% off, and hours starting from 7 pm cost more; hourly chauffeur pricing in Kuala Lumpur shows how it adds up. You can book for someone else, so visiting relatives are met by name, with meet and greet at KLIA 1 and 2; the KLIA transfer by private chauffeur covers the airport side. Book on the chauffeur booking page at least two days ahead.
Self-drive, remember, means one driver: only the named renter may drive. On a long family trip that's a lot of hours for one person, which is another reason to take the chauffeur.
What the total comes to
The day rate is shared by up to seven people, so one big car can cost less per head than two small ones. Three things decide the rest.
Mileage. Seven-seaters tend to go on trips: balik kampung, a weekend in the hills, a wedding in another town. 120 km a day covers the Klang Valley, not a drive to another state. Add 50 km or 100 km a day, or unlimited, when you book; distance paid for afterwards costs more per kilometre.
Tolls. A Touch 'n Go card loaded with RM 50 to RM 500 can come with the keys, and you pay what you load.
Delivery. Free within 10 km of the Petaling Jaya showroom, RM 100 elsewhere in the Klang Valley, a quote beyond it. Useful when the car needs to be at your parents' door, not yours.
Fuel isn't included. The car goes back at the level you collected it.
Matching car to trip
- Family airport run: a Vellfire or Alphard with a chauffeur, at the flat fare.
- Chinese New Year or Hari Raya visiting: a self-drive MPV with extra mileage, booked early; car rental for Chinese New Year covers the festive weeks.
- A weekend in the hills: the Alphard 3.5 for a full load, the XC90 for five or six.
