You can rent a car in Kuala Lumpur as a tourist before you leave home. Book online with Grandpride, pay a RM 50 booking fee that comes off the total, have the car delivered to your hotel anywhere in the Klang Valley, and pay the rest in person when you take it. Sort out your licence and your route first. Malaysia drives on the left, expressway tolls are cashless, and the car has to stay in Peninsular Malaysia.

At home, before you fly

  1. Check your licence. Visitors drive in Malaysia on their home licence, and some licences need an International Driving Permit alongside. An IDP has to be issued in the country that issued your licence, so it can't be arranged after you land. Grandpride's own rules for visiting drivers are CHECK: licences accepted from foreign visitors, whether an International Driving Permit is required and for which countries' licences, minimum age (and whether it is higher for supercars), and years held. If you're not sure about the IDP, ask us on WhatsApp before you travel.
  1. Decide who drives. Only the named renter may drive a Grandpride self-drive car. If two of you were planning to share the wheel, book in the name of the one who'll drive, or think about a chauffeur.
  1. Book. Choose a car on the vehicle list, pick dates and times, add protection, mileage and a toll card. Guest checkout means no account to create. The price is in Malaysian ringgit and itemised before you reserve. The only thing paid online is the RM 50 booking fee, which comes off the total.
  1. Ask about the deposit and cancellation. Know what to have ready on the day CHECK: deposit amount, payment methods accepted at handover including foreign cards, whether the deposit must be on a credit card, and how long the refund takes after you return home, and what happens if your plans change CHECK: cancellation policy and any charges.
  1. Choose your protection. Every rental includes Basic Cover, where you pay for damage up to the standard excess. A Loss Damage Waiver lowers the excess; Grandpride Protection+ takes it to zero for damage and theft, glass and tyres included. If you're used to driving on the right, you're on unfamiliar roads on the unfamiliar side, and that's a good reason to take one of the higher levels. If your travel insurance covers a rental excess, check it applies in Malaysia and to the value of the car you've picked. Our guide to car rental insurance in Malaysia explains each level.
  1. Pick your mileage. Every rental includes 120 km a day, which is plenty in the city. A return trip to Genting Highlands or KLIA is roughly 100 to 150 km depending on where you start, so +50 km a day gives a margin. For Melaka or Penang, take unlimited; it costs less per km than paying for extra distance afterwards.
  1. Pack: passport, driving licence (and IDP if needed), the card you'll pay and leave the deposit with, and your hotel's full address and the name the booking is under.

Our team is easiest to reach from abroad on WhatsApp, +6010 322 3223. Malaysia is eight hours ahead of GMT, and the showroom is open Monday to Saturday 9 am to 9 pm and Sunday 10 am to 8 pm, Malaysian time.

When you arrive

  1. Don't plan to drive straight off the plane. A Grandpride store at KLIA is coming soon but isn't open yet, and whether a self-drive car can be handed over at the airport is CHECK: can a rental car be delivered to or collected from KLIA, and at what fee. Most people are better off being driven to the hotel after a long flight anyway. A Grandpride chauffeur meets you in arrivals at KLIA 1 or 2, tracks your flight, and holds a nameboard if you ask. In a Toyota Vellfire it's a flat RM 300 for trips under 80 km, day or night. Our KLIA transfer guide compares the cars. Online chauffeur bookings need two days' notice.
  1. Get the car at your hotel. Grandpride delivers anywhere in the Klang Valley: free within 10 km of the Petaling Jaya showroom, RM 100 elsewhere, and by quote outside the Klang Valley CHECK: minimum notice for delivery. Add the hotel address when you book and message us the day before to agree the spot: lobby, drop-off area or car park. Someone else can collect it for you if their details are on the booking. Our guide to car rental delivery in the Klang Valley explains the handover. Or collect from the showroom in Section 13, Petaling Jaya; car rental in Petaling Jaya explains that, and directions are on the contact page.

On the road

  1. Know the basics. Malaysia drives on the left in right-hand-drive cars, so if you're used to the other side, take a quiet first hour. Distances and limits are in kilometres. Expressways are tolled and cashless: take Grandpride's Touch 'n Go card, loaded with anything from RM 50 to RM 500, and you pay exactly what's on it. Many shopping-centre and hotel car parks take the same card. Map apps work well and are widely used here.
  1. Watch for the local hazards. Motorcycles filter between lanes, especially in slow traffic, so check mirrors before changing lane or turning. Afternoon downpours make roads slippery fast; slow down and leave more space. Rush hours are heavy on the main roads in and out of the city, so plan airport runs around them. In a supercar, take hotel ramps and speed bumps slowly and at an angle. The car may not go into Singapore or Thailand. If you'd rather be driven up to the highlands, see the private car from KL to Genting Highlands.

Giving it back

  1. Agree the return time and place in advance CHECK: can the car be collected from the hotel at the end of the rental. Bring the fuel back to the level it was at collection. And leave plenty of time before your flight for the traffic to KLIA.
