A bodyguard for a celebrity or influencer in Malaysia

Updated · By the Grandpride team, Petaling Jaya

Draft, not public. 3 questions for Grandpride to answer before this is published, highlighted below.

Bentley Bentayga Mansory

A bodyguard for a celebrity or influencer is usually booked for one day: a mall launch, a fan meet, a brand event or a shoot somewhere public. At Grandpride one bodyguard costs RM 440 for an 8-hour day, and a driver cum bodyguard, who also drives your own car, costs RM 495. How many you need has less to do with how famous you are than with the crowd, the venue and how you get in and out.

How many to book

More isn't automatically safer. A big entourage gets noticed on its own, and it's harder to move through a mall with six people than with two. Start from the day you have:

Your dayA sensible starting point
A shoot on location with a small crewOne bodyguard, or a driver cum bodyguard
A brand event at a hotel, guests by invitationOne bodyguard, working with the venue's security
A mall appearance or an open fan meetTwo or more bodyguards, plus the organiser's barriers and security
A long day across several venuesA driver cum bodyguard, or a driver plus a bodyguard

The crowd itself belongs to the organiser. Barriers, queues and wristbands are venue or event security; your bodyguard looks after you. Our guide to event security vs a bodyguard explains where one job stops and the other starts. Grandpride's published service is the personal side: bodyguards, and drivers who double as bodyguards CHECK: does Grandpride also provide event security teams, or personal bodyguards only?. If you want more than one bodyguard from us, say so when you request CHECK: how many bodyguards Grandpride can supply for one appearance, and whether a team is priced differently.

Who books it

Artists with a manager usually have protection arranged by the management or agency, from a provider the team already uses. For a launch or a concert, the organiser books venue security for the crowd, but that team covers the event, not your whole day. Influencers and creators without management book directly, typically for a fan meet or a busy public shoot. Some days need all three.

Whoever books, ask to see the provider's licence. Bodyguard and personal protection work in Malaysia is licensed by the Ministry of Home Affairs (KDN) under the Private Agencies Act 1971. Grandpride's position is CHECK: KDN licence number held by Grandpride Luxury Travel Sdn. Bhd., or the name of the licensed partner that provides the personnel. Grandpride's personnel typically come from military and law-enforcement backgrounds. Our checklist for hiring a bodyguard in Malaysia lists the other questions to ask.

Planning an appearance, from the run sheet to the car door

The risky moments are at the edges of the day: arriving, leaving, and whenever the plan changes at short notice. A good bodyguard wants these settled before the day, so send them:

  • the run sheet: arrival time, which entrance, the holding room, the stage or signing slot, and the exit
  • the way in and out, ideally a separate entrance from the public with the car waiting close to it
  • contacts for the organiser's security lead, your manager or assistant, and the driver
  • your limits: how long you'll sign or take photos, and how you'd like people stopped politely when time is up

On the day, the bodyguard stays close from the car to the holding room and from the holding room to the stage. At a meet-and-greet they manage how people come up to you, keep the line moving, and step in if anyone grabs, pushes or won't let go. When it's time to leave, they take you out by the route you agreed, with the car already there.

One thing you control yourself: live posting tells people exactly where you are. Post from the venue after you've left, or share the location later in the day, and ask your team to do the same.

Shoots and content days

A public shoot pulls in onlookers fast, more so with a striking car in the frame. With a bodyguard there, the crew can get on with the work while someone watches the talent and the people gathering round. If the shoot moves between locations, a driver cum bodyguard drives your own car from one to the next, door to door, with unlimited stops. If the car is part of the shot, our guide to car rental for a photoshoot in Kuala Lumpur covers picking and booking one.

What it costs

Each role is priced per 8-hour day, with overtime by the hour:

Role8-hour dayOvertime per hourAfter midnight, per hour
BodyguardRM 440RM 50RM 60
Driver cum bodyguardRM 495RM 60RM 80
DriverRM 385RM 40RM 50

A fan meet from 1 pm to 10 pm is nine hours. With one bodyguard that's RM 440 plus RM 50, so RM 490; two bodyguards on the same hours come to RM 980 at the individual rate. A shoot from 6 am to 4 pm with a driver cum bodyguard in your car is ten hours: RM 495 plus 2 × RM 60, which is RM 615. Our guide to bodyguard cost in Malaysia works through the overtime rules in more detail.

In Bahasa: seorang bodyguard Grandpride berharga RM 440 untuk 8 jam, dan kerja lebih masa dikira mengikut jam.

Arriving in the right car

How you arrive is part of the appearance, and a driver cum bodyguard only drives your own car. If you'd rather arrive in ours, a chauffeur car booked by the hour waits at the door for the whole event. The Bentley Bentayga Mansory is the one for an arrival people photograph; a seven-seat Toyota Alphard has room for your stylist and manager. Chauffeur cars are priced per car and booked separately from the bodyguard, and our guide to a chauffeur for events and galas in KL explains evening rates and waiting time.

Send the date, the venue and your run sheet through the bodyguard request form, or read the full driver and bodyguard service page first.
