To hire a bodyguard in Malaysia without regretting it, settle three things before you pay: that the company is licensed for personal protection under the Private Agencies Act 1971, who exactly will be standing next to you, and what the price does and doesn't include. Put the same questions to every provider, Grandpride included. What follows is general information for asking them well, not legal advice.
The checklist, in the order to ask
- The licence number, and the company that holds it. Personal guard and protection services need a licence under the Private Agencies Act 1971, issued by the Ministry of Home Affairs (KDN). A licence belongs to one company, so check it's the company you're signing with.
- Whether the work is subcontracted. Some providers pass bookings to a licensed partner. That can be fine, as long as you know the partner's name.
- Whether they're on top of the new rules. The Private Agencies (Amendment) Bill 2025 passed the Dewan Rakyat in October 2025 and the Dewan Negara in December 2025. Ask whether the changes are in force yet and how they affect the service.
- Who is coming, by name. The licence covers the company; the person next to you is who you're paying for. Ask if you'll be told who's assigned before the day, and what happens if that person falls ill.
- Their background and training: where they served or trained, and for how long.
- Employed or freelance. Does the person work for the provider, or are they brought in for the job?
- Armed or unarmed. Get this clear from the start. If a provider offers armed protection, ask to see the paperwork that allows it rather than taking it on trust.
- Discretion. How are your personal details, your itinerary and anything the bodyguard sees or hears handled? Is a confidentiality agreement available?
- The price, in writing. The quote should show the day rate and the hours it covers, the overtime rate and whether late-night hours cost more, whether a car is included and who pays fuel, tolls and parking, any travel, meal or accommodation charges outside the city, and the cancellation terms.
If a provider is vague about its licence, or offers to work around it, look elsewhere.
Walk away if you see
- No licence details, or a licence in a different company's name with no explanation.
- A promise that you'll be "100% safe". Nobody honest can guarantee that.
- Cash only, with no invoice or written confirmation.
- Casual offers of armed protection with nothing to show for it.
- A price far below everyone else's, and no word on who's coming.
The other warning sign is silence. A good bodyguard asks about your day before the job, not during it: the timetable with addresses, who'll be with you (family, guests, colleagues, children), whether there's a specific concern or it's precautionary, how you'll travel (your car, a hired car, on foot), and who to call if plans change. If a provider asks nothing at all, take note.
One day, or travel
A booking can be short: one evening event, one day of meetings, one visitor who wants company. Grandpride prices by the 8-hour day, so a single day is one day rate, with overtime by the hour if it runs long.
Travel needs more agreed up front: who pays for transport, meals and accommodation, how many hours count as a working day while you're away, and what happens on rest days CHECK: does Grandpride provide bodyguards for travel outside the Klang Valley or for multi-day trips, and how are travel, meals and lodging charged?. If you'll be driven between stops, a driver cum bodyguard does both jobs in your own car. For a guest who also needs a car with a chauffeur, the VIP chauffeur service can be booked alongside.
How Grandpride's answers stack up
Grandpride's Driver & Bodyguard service has three roles, each priced per 8-hour day: a driver at RM 385, a bodyguard at RM 440, and a driver cum bodyguard at RM 495. Overtime is by the hour, at a higher rate after midnight; for a bodyguard it's RM 50 an hour, or RM 60 after midnight. The driver and driver cum bodyguard drive your own car, door to door, with as many stops as you need. The personnel typically come from military and law-enforcement backgrounds. Bodyguard cost in Malaysia works through overtime examples.
On the rest of the checklist, these answers are still being confirmed:
- The licence: CHECK: KDN licence number held by Grandpride Luxury Travel Sdn. Bhd., or the name of the licensed partner that provides the personnel. Ask for it when you request a booking, as you would with anyone.
- If you'll be told who's assigned before the day CHECK: does Grandpride share the assigned person's name and background in advance.
- Whether a confidentiality agreement is offered CHECK: will Grandpride sign an NDA on request.
- Cancellation terms CHECK: Grandpride's cancellation policy for driver and bodyguard bookings.
If you only need someone at the wheel, not protection, see a personal driver for your own car. Companies arranging cars, chauffeurs and security for executives together can read about corporate car rental and chauffeurs in Kuala Lumpur.
Before you book
Boleh sewa bodyguard untuk satu hari sahaja?
Boleh. Grandpride menawarkan bodyguard untuk satu hari bekerja selama 8 jam pada kadar RM 440, dan kerja lebih masa dikenakan bayaran mengikut jam.
Can a bodyguard also drive my car?
Yes. A driver cum bodyguard does both for RM 495 per 8-hour day. If you'd rather have one person stay with the car while another stays with you, book a driver and a bodyguard separately.
How far ahead should I book?
As early as you can, so there's time to brief the person assigned CHECK: minimum notice Grandpride needs for a bodyguard booking. The request form asks for the date, start time, hours, pickup address and a short description of the day; you can also come to the showroom in Section 13, Petaling Jaya, with the address and hours on the contact page.
