Supercar experience in Malaysia: a day with the car, not a few laps

Updated · By the Grandpride team, Petaling Jaya

Draft, not public. 5 questions for Grandpride to answer before this is published, highlighted below.

Ferrari 458 Italia

If you want to know what a supercar does at its limit, book a circuit session. If you want to know what it's like to own one, rent it for a day. A supercar experience in Malaysia with Grandpride is the second kind: the car is yours from morning, from RM 2,800 a day for an Audi R8 or RM 7,200 for a Ferrari 458 Italia, on public roads, with 120 km included and the route up to you.

What a rental doesn't give you is track speed, and on a public road it shouldn't.

How the day can go

Morning: take the car early, when the roads are quieter and the heat is lower. Collect it from the Petaling Jaya showroom or have it delivered, free within 10 km of the showroom and RM 100 elsewhere in the Klang Valley. Before you go anywhere, spend ten minutes on the seat, the mirrors and the controls; the low nose and steep car park ramps catch out new supercar drivers, and how to drive a supercar for the first time goes through it.

Breakfast: somewhere with an open, quiet car park. That's your photo stop too; a busy roadside is a poor place for pictures and a worse place to park something wide and low.

The drive: pick a road, not a speed. A hill road with bends and views stays with you longer than a straight expressway. Driving up to Genting Highlands explains the climb. Speed limits and cameras apply to supercars like anything else; see speed limits and AES cameras in Malaysia.

Evening: the run home. Book the return for the next day instead and you also get an evening drive and a morning one, since you choose the pick-up and return dates and times yourself.

Parking all day: look for a space with room on both sides.

Which car

CarWhat it's likeDay rate
Audi R8Mid-engined and approachableRM 2,800
Nissan GT-R35Brutal pace, everyday mannersRM 2,800
Porsche 992 Carrera 4SPrecise, fine in any weatherRM 6,100
Lamborghini HuracánThe V10 sound and the wedge shapeFrom RM 6,100
Ferrari 458 ItaliaNaturally aspirated V8, classic FerrariRM 7,200
McLaren 570SLight, sharp, dihedral doorsRM 8,800
McLaren 720SThe most dramatic of the lotFrom RM 7,700

For a first supercar day, the R8 and the Carrera 4S are the easy ones. If the point is noise and drama, the Huracán and the 720S. Ask at handover how the gearbox and drive modes work on your car CHECK: gearbox type of each supercar in the fleet; usually it's the width, the low nose and the view out that take getting used to, more than the speed. Both McLarens are on the McLaren list, and Ferrari rental in Malaysia and McLaren rental in Malaysia go into those cars in more detail.

What the day costs

The price is the car's day rate, with 120 km and Basic Cover included, and you see the itemised total before you reserve. What moves it:

  • Protection. On a supercar, read the standard excess first, then decide whether a Loss Damage Waiver (lower excess) or Grandpride Protection+ (none at all for damage and theft, glass and tyres covered) makes sense for your day.
  • Mileage. Into the hills and back can use more than 120 km. Add 50 km or 100 km a day, or unlimited, when you book; kilometres paid for afterwards cost more each.
  • A Touch 'n Go card, loaded with RM 50 to RM 500, charged at exactly what you load.
  • Fuel isn't included. Return it at the level you collected it.
  • A deposit, due on the day CHECK: deposit amount for supercars and how long the refund takes.

Age, and who drives

There's no special legal age for a supercar: in Malaysia you can hold a car licence from 17. The limit that matters is the rental company's, and Grandpride's minimum age and licence history for supercars are confirmed when you book CHECK: minimum age and years of licence held for each supercar. Car rental age requirements in Malaysia explains how these rules usually work.

Only the named renter drives, and no extra drivers can be added. Two friends who both want to drive means two bookings. That matters for gifts as well: you can give someone a supercar day, but the booking has to be in their name CHECK: does Grandpride sell gift vouchers for a supercar day?.

And the track?

Sepang International Circuit runs open track days for cars from time to time, depending on circuit availability, and it has hosted driving-experience sessions. A rental car is a different question. Whether a Grandpride car may go on a circuit at all, and whether any protection would apply there, has to be agreed in writing before you plan it CHECK: are Grandpride rental cars allowed on a race circuit or track day?. Until Grandpride confirms it, plan your day on the road. Sepang circuit track days covers the circuit side.

Dengan Grandpride, pengalaman supercar bermaksud sewa sehari penuh: Audi R8 RM 2,800 sehari dan Ferrari 458 Italia RM 7,200 sehari, termasuk 120 km dan Basic Cover.

The booking steps are in the supercar rental guide, and every car's calendar is on the vehicle list.
