Wedding security in Malaysia: do you need it, and who does what

Updated · By the Grandpride team, Petaling Jaya

Draft, not public. 3 questions for Grandpride to answer before this is published, highlighted below.

Rolls Royce Ghost

Most weddings don't need security. The ones that do usually have one of these: a well-known family or guest, a very large guest list, a public venue, or a lot of value on show. When a wedding does need it, wedding security in Malaysia is normally two things working together. The venue's own staff look after the hall and the doors, and one or more personal bodyguards look after the couple and their family through a long day. Grandpride provides the second kind: RM 440 for an 8-hour day per bodyguard, or RM 495 for a driver cum bodyguard who also drives the family's car.

What there is to protect

Run through this list. If none of it applies, you probably don't need anyone.

  • The couple: a clear path for the march-in, the stage, the photos and the exit, without the crowd closing in.
  • Parents and VIP guests: older relatives, dignitaries or business guests who need a calm way in and a seat kept for them.
  • The door: making sure the people coming in are the people who were invited.
  • Gifts and money: the gift table and the box for money envelopes hold a lot of value in one place.
  • Bridal jewellery, especially when it changes hands between outfits.
  • Transport: the bridal car, the family cars, and getting in and out in front of a crowd.

The venue's job and the bodyguard's job

Hotels and large halls have their own security, and some planners bring a door team. They look after the venue. A personal bodyguard looks after people.

So gatecrashers are mainly a door problem. The venue or planner handles the door, with someone from each family on hand, and the bodyguard steps in if a problem reaches the couple or family. Grandpride's published service is personal bodyguards and drivers CHECK: does Grandpride also provide event security teams, or personal bodyguards only?; for guest-list checks, start with your venue or planner. Our guide to event security vs a bodyguard goes into the difference.

Keeping uninvited guests out is mostly organisation:

  1. One guest list, shared with whoever is on the door, and a named person from each family who can say yes or no to a stranger.
  2. A registration table at the entrance, staffed by people who know the families.
  3. A separate entrance for the couple and VIPs if the venue has one, with the car waiting there.
  4. If public figures are coming, an agreed line on media and phones, including whether guests may post during the event.

The car is the exposed moment

Getting in and out of a car, in a wedding dress, in front of a crowd, is when a couple is most exposed, so plan where the car stops and who meets it.

Grandpride's chauffeur-driven wedding car is the long-wheelbase Mercedes-Benz S-Class, in white, silver or black, with room for the dress; our guide to a wedding car with a driver in Kuala Lumpur covers booking it by the hour. If the family's own car is being used, a driver cum bodyguard drives it door to door, with unlimited stops, and stays with the family at each venue. If the couple want to arrive in something special, such as the Rolls-Royce Ghost, our wedding car rental guide explains the options.

What a wedding day costs

Grandpride prices each role per 8-hour day, with overtime by the hour after that.

Role8-hour dayOvertime per hourAfter midnight
BodyguardRM 440RM 50RM 60
Driver cum bodyguardRM 495RM 60RM 80
DriverRM 385RM 40RM 50

Wedding days are long, so expect overtime.

A daytime wedding, 8 am to 7 pm, with one bodyguard: eleven hours, so RM 440 plus 3 × RM 50. RM 590.

An evening banquet, 3 pm to 1 am: ten hours. RM 440 for the first eight, one hour at RM 50 (11 pm to midnight) and one at RM 60 (midnight to 1 am). RM 550.

For two bodyguards, or a bodyguard and a driver, add each person's day CHECK: how many bodyguards Grandpride can supply for one wedding, and whether a team is priced differently. Our guide to bodyguard cost in Malaysia explains the overtime rules.

Kos bodyguard untuk majlis perkahwinan: RM 440 untuk 8 jam. Untuk majlis dari 8 pagi hingga 7 malam, jumlahnya RM 590 termasuk kerja lebih masa.

Hiring one

  1. Decide what you're protecting: the couple, the parents, a VIP guest, the gifts, or all of them.
  2. Ask the venue what its own security covers, and find the gaps.
  3. Check the provider's licence. Anyone offering personal protection should hold a KDN licence under the Private Agencies Act 1971, so ask for the details before you confirm. Grandpride's licence position is CHECK: KDN licence number held by Grandpride Luxury Travel Sdn. Bhd., or the name of the licensed partner that provides the personnel. Our checklist for hiring a bodyguard in Malaysia lists the other questions to ask.
  4. Send the bodyguard the layout and the run sheet a few days before: arrival, solemnisation, march-in, meal, cake, photos, departure.
  5. Name one family contact for the bodyguard on the day.

Grandpride's personnel typically come from military and law-enforcement backgrounds. Send the date, venues, hours and a few lines about the wedding through the request form, or message on WhatsApp.
