Collect at 7 pm on Friday, return by 7 pm on Sunday, and a weekend car rental in KL is two rental days, because Grandpride counts each day as 24 hours from pick-up CHECK: confirm a rental day runs 24 hours from the pick-up time, and whether any grace period applies on return. Bring it back at 9 pm instead and it's three. Our one-day rental guide walks through the same count for a single day.
Three common ways to time it
| Collect | Return | Rental days | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Friday 7 pm | Sunday 7 pm | 2 | Leaving after work, back for dinner on Sunday |
| Saturday 9 am | Sunday 7 pm | 2 | A full Saturday and Sunday, no Friday night |
| Friday 7 pm | Monday 9 am | 3 | Coming back late on Sunday, or a long weekend |
The Saturday-morning option gives you the same two days with less time sitting in a car park on Friday night. The Friday evening option means you can set off first thing on Saturday without waiting for a morning handover.
Mind the showroom hours if you're collecting or returning in person. The Petaling Jaya showroom in Section 13 is open 9 am to 9 pm Monday to Saturday, and 10 am to 8 pm on Sunday, so a Sunday-night return at 9 pm doesn't work there. Delivery and collection at your door is the other way round it: free within 10 km of the showroom, RM 100 elsewhere in the Klang Valley CHECK: whether delivery and collection are available on Sunday evenings, and how much notice is needed.
How far two days of mileage goes
Each rental day includes 120 km, so a two-day weekend gives you 240 km. The usual weekend drives from KL compare like this (one way, roughly):
| Destination | Distance each way | Round trip | What to add |
|---|---|---|---|
| Port Dickson | 90 to 100 km | About 200 km | Probably nothing, if you don't drive much once there |
| Melaka | About 145 km | About 290 km | +50 km a day |
| Cameron Highlands | About 200 km | About 400 km | +100 km a day, or unlimited |
| Ipoh | About 205 km | About 410 km | +100 km a day |
| Penang | About 355 km | About 710 km | Unlimited |
Add the driving you'll do once you're there. Cameron Highlands in particular is a lot of short trips between Tanah Rata, Brinchang and the farms. Add the distance when you book: unlimited mileage costs less per kilometre than paying for the extra afterwards. Which car for which weekend
A weekend in town, dinners and a drive: a coupé or a convertible. The Mercedes-Benz C300 Coupe at RM 1,300 a day or the BMW Z4 at RM 1,500 a day are easy to park and fun on a Sunday morning.
Two of you, out of town: a grand tourer or a sports car with a usable boot. The Aston Martin DB11 at RM 7,700 a day is built for exactly this; our Aston Martin rental guide explains why.
A family, hills or a lot of bags: an SUV. The Range Rover Sport at RM 2,000 a day sits high over speed bumps and steep resort driveways, and the Volvo XC90, from RM 1,400 a day, adds a third row.
Six or seven people: a Vellfire or Alphard, from RM 900 a day. Our MPV rental guide covers driving one yourself.
What catches people out
- One driver for the whole weekend. Only the named renter may drive a Grandpride self-drive car, so friends can't take turns on the way to Penang. If nobody wants to do all the driving, book a chauffeur instead.
- No Singapore. A weekend in Johor Bahru is fine; crossing the Causeway isn't, because the cars stay in Peninsular Malaysia.
- Fuel. The car goes back at the level it left. Fill up on the way home, not on Monday morning.
- Friday weekends up north and on the east coast. Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu keep a Friday and Saturday weekend (as at 2026), so if you're driving to Kuala Terengganu or Kota Bharu, government offices and some businesses there are closed on Friday and open on Sunday.
- Long weekends. A public holiday doesn't change the count: a Friday-to-Monday trip is three or four rental days depending on your times, and for anything longer, ask us for a better rate before you reserve, as the rental page invites you to.
