A kereta majlis tunang is mostly about moving people and gift trays to the right house at the right time. The bridal-car question comes later, at the wedding. For most families that means seven-seat MPVs: a Toyota Vellfire from Grandpride is from RM 900 a day if someone in the family drives, or from RM 150 an hour with a chauffeur who waits outside during the ceremony.
Work out the number of cars from people and trays
Each self-drive MPV seats seven, including the driver. So three cars carry up to 21 people, which looks like enough for a party of 20. It usually isn't. Trays take seats and floor space too, and the visitors come home with return trays from the other family. For 20 people with a lot of trays, book a fourth car.
Before the day, lay out the largest tray and measure it. That tells you more than any seat count.
The cars
| Role in the convoy | Car | How | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Parents, elders and the main trays | Toyota Vellfire or Alphard | Self-drive or chauffeur | From RM 900 a day, or RM 150 an hour with a chauffeur |
| The second car | Toyota Alphard 3.5 | Self-drive or chauffeur | RM 1,900 a day, or RM 200 an hour |
| Something special for the parents | Lexus LM300H, 7 seats | Self-drive or chauffeur | RM 3,900 a day, or RM 770 an hour |
| A formal car for two | Mercedes-Benz S-Class | Chauffeur | RM 300 an hour |
The Alphard and Vellfire each seat seven and take three large suitcases, and the sliding doors on both sides make passing trays in and out easy. Who drives
If a family member drives, you pay the day rate and whatever you add. But only the named renter may drive a self-drive car, and additional drivers can't be added. Three cars means three renters, each on their own booking, and one cousin can't drive them all in relays. Each rental includes 120 km a day; if the engagement is in another state, add 50 km or 100 km a day, or unlimited mileage, and allow for weekend traffic. A Touch 'n Go card can come with the keys, loaded with RM 50 to RM 500. We can bring the car to your house: free within 10 km of the Petaling Jaya showroom, RM 100 elsewhere in the Klang Valley, and by quote further away. It goes back with the same fuel level, and it stays in Peninsular Malaysia. Online you pay only a RM 50 booking fee, which comes off the total; self-drive rentals also take a deposit CHECK: deposit amount for an MPV and how long the refund takes.
With a chauffeur, nobody in the family drives in baju Melayu or a cheongsam, hunts for parking in a packed taman, or watches the clock. Hourly bookings run from 3 to 23 hours with as many stops as you need, and the chauffeur waits nearby during the ceremony. A one-way trip, such as fetching a grandparent from another town, is priced on distance. Online bookings need at least two days' notice, and the organiser can book on someone else's behalf, in which case the chauffeur contacts that passenger directly. If the family already owns a suitable MPV, Grandpride can supply a driver for it at RM 385 for an 8-hour day, with overtime at RM 40 an hour. Our guide to hiring a driver for your own car explains it.
On the day
- Put one tray keeper in each car, someone who knows what's on board and carries it in.
- Run the air conditioning before loading, and don't leave cakes, flowers or trays in a parked car in the sun.
- If the family wants to arrive together, meet a short drive from the house and go in as one group.
- Residential streets fill up fast. Drop the elders and the trays at the gate, then go and park.
- Leave space for the return trays.
How the customs shape the cars
Every family does it a little differently, and customs vary by state, by community and between generations, so your elders' guidance comes first. Broadly:
At a Malay majlis tunang, after the families have met and the proposal (meminang) has been accepted, the engagement is usually held at the woman's family home. The man's family and representatives travel there with gift trays, traditionally in odd numbers, and a female relative from his side, often his mother, puts the ring on the bride-to-be's finger. The man himself may or may not be there. The woman's family gives trays in return, which travel home with the visitors.
At a Chinese betrothal (guo da li), the groom's side delivers betrothal gifts to the bride's family on a date chosen in advance as auspicious, some weeks or months before the wedding. The bride's family returns part of the gifts. What the gifts are, and how many, depends on the family's dialect group and traditions.
Either way, one side travels with people, gifts and a timetable, which is why seats, flat space for trays and an on-time arrival matter more than the badge. The hosting side may need a car too, to collect grandparents or relatives from out of town.
Some families like a ribbon or a small arrangement on the lead car. On a rental, ask first CHECK: may customers decorate a rented car for an engagement, and does Grandpride offer decoration?.
