BMW rental in KL: which one to take

Updated · By the Grandpride team, Petaling Jaya

BMW X5M

BMW rental in KL with Grandpride starts from RM 800 a day, and the choice runs from a 3 Series to an electric i7 you can also book with a chauffeur. Every one comes with 120 km a day and Basic Cover. Start from what the day is for, not the badge:

  • Business trip with a long drive: the 530i. If you're driving colleagues, the 740Li.
  • Collecting a VIP: the i7 with a chauffeur.
  • Family weekend, if everyone fits in five seats: the X5M.
  • Two of you and a good road: the Z4, roof down.
  • One or two people in town all week: the 3 Series.

Look at the rates before you assume anything. They don't always follow size or age, and the bigger car isn't always the dearer one. Each car's page shows its rate and which days are already taken.

The saloons

The 3 Series is the small one. It slots into a tight mall car park or a narrow Bangsar street without fuss, and for one or two people doing a few days of meetings it's all the BMW you need.

The 530i is the 5 Series with a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder. There's more room in the back than in the 3 Series, and it settles into a quiet, steady cruise on the expressway. If the business trip includes Ipoh or Melaka, take this one.

The 740Li is the long-wheelbase 7 Series. The L means 140 mm more between the axles than the standard car, and nearly all of it goes to rear legroom. Grandpride has a 2018 and a 2021 car. Choose it when the passengers matter as much as the driver: parents visiting, or a client you're picking up yourself. Our guide to luxury sedan rental in KL puts these against the Mercedes-Benz and Porsche saloons.

The i7: drive it or be driven

The i7 is the first fully electric 7 Series, and it's the one BMW in the fleet you can drive yourself or have driven. Self-drive is RM 3,300 a day with 120 km included. With a Grandpride chauffeur it's from RM 600 an hour, for 3 to 23 hours, or a flat RM 2,300 one way to KLIA or KLIA 2. It seats five, with room for two large suitcases. Online chauffeur bookings need at least two days' notice.

At launch BMW quoted roughly 580 to 610 km of range on the official WLTP test, which is far more than a day in the Klang Valley uses. For a longer trip, our guide to renting an EV in Malaysia covers charging. If the i7 is for a visiting executive, the BMW i7 chauffeur page shows the car and prices the trip. For the S-Class alternative, see executive car rental in Kuala Lumpur.

The X5M and the Z4

The X5M looks like a family SUV and drives like something much smaller. It has a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 and M xDrive all-wheel drive, so it covers ground fast in any weather with passengers and bags on board. For a fast weekend up to Genting or the Cameron Highlands, where you want space and grip, it's the BMW to take. The luxury SUV comparison sets it beside the Range Rovers, the G63 and the Urus.

The Z4 is a two-seat roadster with a powered roof. At handover, ask how the roof works and whether it closes on the move: a Klang Valley shower can turn up out of a clear afternoon. Early mornings and evenings are when it's at its best. Our guide to convertible car rental in Kuala Lumpur lists the other roof-down cars.

The M4

The BMW M4 Competition Coupé is in the fleet with no published day rate, so it's priced on request. It has a twin-turbocharged six-cylinder engine and is the most track-focused BMW on the list. Send your dates on WhatsApp and we'll give you a price and check it's free.

What gets added to the day rate

Only what you choose. If you're leaving the Klang Valley, add 50 km or 100 km a day, or unlimited mileage; anything over your allowance is charged afterwards at that car's per-km rate. Basic Cover is included, a Loss Damage Waiver lowers the excess, and Grandpride Protection+ takes it to zero for damage and theft, with glass and tyres included. The car goes back with the same fuel level it had at collection.

Delivery to a hotel or home is free within 10 km of the Petaling Jaya showroom and RM 100 elsewhere in the Klang Valley. Only the named renter may drive a self-drive car, so book it in the name of whoever is driving.

Dalam Bahasa Malaysia: sewa BMW dengan Grandpride bermula dari RM 800 sehari, termasuk 120 km sehari dan Basic Cover, dan BMW X5M pula RM 1,600 sehari.

If you already own a BMW and only need someone to drive it, a Grandpride driver is RM 385 for an eight-hour day. To see what's free on your dates, open the BMW list.
